Communication

Campaigns and promotions encourage daily commuters to combine active and public transport by highlighting safe routes, convenient services, and clear benefits. Public awareness-raising helps people understand and trust multimodal travel, while strong partnerships between transport providers, cities, and communities ensure a seamless, user-friendly system that makes sustainable mobility practical and attractive.

Campaigns, promotion of transport for daily commuters

Promoting the connection between active and public transportation modes for daily commuters goes beyond of the safe and well-designed infrastructure, it also relies on clear, effective campaigns and targeted promotion strategies. These communication efforts can show how walking, cycling, and public transport can work together, making daily travel easier, faster, and more sustainable. By communicating both practical benefits, such as convenience and cost savings, and personal advantages, like improved health and reduced stress, campaigns help commuters see multimodal travel as a real, attractive option.

Campaigns can also show available routes to the public transport hubs, safe cycling paths, and facilities such as bike parking near stations. Effective campaigns use clear messaging and visible signage, making it easy and attractive for commuters to change transport mode. They reach people through a mix of traditional media like posters, flyers, local newspapers and digital platforms like social media, apps, and interactive websites. Seasonal events, such as “Bike to Work Week,” provide opportunities to engage commuters directly and make sustainable travel memorable and appealing. Tailoring campaigns to different target groups, such as students, office workers, or suburban residents, ensures messages are relevant and actionable.

“No ridiculous Car trips” campaign

The „No Ridiculous Car Trips“ campaign in Malmö aims to reduce short car trips - under five kilometers - by promoting cycling. Using a combination of conventional and unconventional marketing methods, the message is repeatedly conveyed. The campaign has shown great impact: many people notice it, changed their behaviour, and support the initiative. Since its launch in 2007, the campaign has been conducted regularly to raise awareness about reducing car traffic.

Public awareness-raising

Raising awareness goes beyond simply sharing information, it shapes attitudes, builds confidence, and encourages long-term behavior change. Awareness campaigns help commuters understand how active and public transport work together, emphasizing safety, convenience, and the personal and environmental benefits of multimodal travel. By presenting clear messages across multiple channels, these campaigns make sustainable mobility familiar, visible, and easy to understand.

Public awareness is strengthened through direct engagement. Workshops, surveys, and interactive platforms allow commuters to share their needs and concerns, creating a feedback loop that improves services and increases trust. When communities feel heard and included, they are more open to trying new travel habits. Awareness initiatives also highlight enabling features—such as bike-sharing availability, secure parking at transit hubs, and real-time travel information—helping people see how these tools support seamless daily travel.

By making options clearer, addressing misconceptions, and building stronger connections with the public, awareness-raising lays the foundation for more sustainable commuting. When people feel informed, supported, and confident in the system, they are far more likely to choose active and public transport in their everyday lives.

Building partnerships

Partnerships are key to amplifying impact. Collaboration between transport providers, local authorities, employers, and community organizations ensures consistent and credible messaging. Employers can support commuting initiatives through flexible schedules or incentives, while cities can integrate campaigns into urban planning, such as expanding pedestrian zones or cycling networks. Partnerships create a supportive environment where active and public transport become natural, efficient choices for commuters.
