Efficient space planning for flexible multi-purpose spaces on trains

Challenge addressed: Seasonal bike demand

According to GYSEV’s experience, available bicycle spaces are insufficient during spring, summer, and autumn tourist seasons. Many passengers combine train travel with cycling, especially in leisure and cross-border tourism regions. Limited capacity leads to overcrowding and denied boarding. Increasing bike capacity in winter would reduce seating comfort, creating a seasonal dilemma.

Solution implemented: Modular removable seats

GYSEV and Stadler introduced a flexible solution: each new train includes 26 removable seats and 2 racks. In peak cycling months, these can be replaced with modular racks for up to 14 bicycles. In winter, racks are removed and seats reinstalled. This ensures optimal comfort and maximized bike capacity. Implementation relies on modular fittings and trained staff.

Results achieved: Proven European results

Flexible seating and bicycle storage solutions have proven successful in other European rail networks. Operators using modular interiors reported higher bicycle capacity in summer, fewer denied boardings, and improved tourist satisfaction. In winter, restored seats ensured comfort. Surveys showed higher customer approval and more balanced seasonal capacity use. These outcomes demonstrate that GYSEV’s approach is based on tested, effective practices that improve multimodal travel and support sustainable mobility goals.

Lessons learned: Plan flexibly for seasons

Challenges included identifying optimal locations for removable seats and racks, ensuring accessibility and safety, and balancing variable capacity. Too few racks would not meet peak demand; too many would reduce comfort in winter. The key lesson: careful planning and flexible design are essential to adapt capacity effectively across seasons.
This practice is relevant for other operators facing seasonal bike transport demand. GYSEV’s modular approach offers a cost-effective way to balance bicycle and seating capacity without separate trainsets. It prevents wasted capacity in low-demand periods and maximizes accessibility during tourism peaks. Other operators can learn from modular design, interior planning, and staff training. The approach supports sustainable mobility and multimodal travel, and can be adapted to various train types.
