Bicycle transport is often held back by overly complex and expensive ticketing systems. Different pricing structures, unclear rules, and multiple points of purchase make it difficult for travelers to bring their bikes along. This creates a barrier, even though combining cycling with public transport can significantly reduce travel time and improve convenience. These challenges highlighted the need for simpler, more accessible solutions to support multimodal travel.
Solution implemented: Bicycle Hungary Pass
With the Bicycle Hungary Pass, travelers can move freely across Hungary with their bicycle. The pass is valid on MÁV-START trains including the Szeged–Hódmezővásárhely tram-train, GYSEV routes, the entire MÁV-HÉV network, and also selected BKK services. This initiative supports multimodal and sustainable transport by simplifying bike-and-ride travel nationwide. It provides a practical and affordable solution that promotes active mobility and helps reduce car dependency.
Results achieved: Convenient and cost-effective solution
The Bicycle Hungary Pass is a highly cost-effective solution for anyone who cycles regularly, becoming worthwhile after just ten single trips or five round-trips. Priced at HUF 4,950 (≈EUR 12.5) and valid for 30 days, it makes integrating cycling into longer journeys both convenient and affordable. For services requiring a reserved bike space, a separate bicycle seat ticket is still needed, but the overall savings remain substantial. The pass caters to commuters, leisure cyclists, and tourists alike, offering a simple way to combine cycling with public transport. The pass can be purchased easily via the MÁV website, app, or ticket vending machines as well. By reducing the cost and complexity of traveling with a bike, it encourages more people to adopt sustainable, multimodal travel, supporting greener mobility.-
Lessons learned: Challenges on popular routes and peak cycling seasons
The Bicycle Hungary Pass encourages more cycling travel, but it also brings challenges. On popular routes or during peak cycling seasons, bike transport capacity can easily be exceeded, leading to congestion and delays. Additionally, the flat-rate structure makes it harder to monitor usage and anticipate demand accurately, complicating planning and adjustments needed to ensure smooth, reliable service for all cyclists.
